RAB 50 Awia Yacoub Yousif
1926-2005

Picture
Born 26/12/1926 in Bebeada north Iraq, at the age of five he moved with his Mother Margaret to Sulaimania after his father’s unexpected passing, he spent his early teenage years growing up in Sulaimania with his uncle’s family until his mother also passed away when he was a boy of fifteen. At that young age in October 1941 he made his way alone to Habbanyia where he enlisted in the Iraq Levies, enlisting as a Private he elevated through ranks and was commissioned RAB Khamshi in 1947.

His career in the Levies was as exciting as the man himself, an accomplished sportsman and a sharpshooter he was accepted in the elite parachute company and served in Both Albania and Greece.

After the war he married Margaret Barcham in Syria and continued serving in the Levies until the disbandment of the Force in 1955. Civilian life did not appeal to this 29 year old so he opted to join the Iraqi army and after six months in the academy he qualified as second Lieutenant. He served for a further 17 years and retired with the rank of Major.

In 1975 he was appointed Mayor of the township of Amadia in Northern Iraq, he served for one year after which he immigrated to the United States.

Major Awia Yacoub Yousif Died in Morton Grove Illinois on the 25/2/2005 and is buried at Montrose Cemetery in Chicago.
